Describes several problems which the author met and some of the methods used in discussing them in the vernacular with his informants. The word checking technique seeks to discover the denotations of words already employed in translation. Endeavors to reproduce as clearly as possible the situation denoted by the expression in the text and then asks the informant how it is referred to in the vernacular. The translator of the NT is under the necessity of choosing one word or expression to render a Greek word in a given context. The lexicographer, on the other hand, has the privilege of exhibiting the background of the word, and of showing that more than one meaning is possible. This thesis is illustrated by the choice of 14 words in specific texts of the New Testament. View Less

Because of the versatility of the preposition en, it is difficult in certain contexts to determine whether it is to receive the “proper” or literal rendering or to be treated as pregnant. The article is a plea for the liberalization of the translation of en, based upon a series of selected references in which the reasonable translation should be “for,” “by,” or something other than “in.” View Less

There are few places which present the translator with a greater variety of ethnolinguistic problems than the Camerouns. Several factors serve as impediments to the development of a vernacular program; namely, the French administration has ordered all formal education to be in the French language; the rewards of literacy have been presented in terms of an outside orientation; the General Assembly takes the position that no translations will be allowed unless the native translator has a thorough theological education and knowledge of the Biblical languages; and standardization of orthography will be resisted. The suggested plan rests on the publication of diglots and conducting translation seminars. View Less
