Two semantic problems stand out in Acts 3 and 4: (1) the use of the word onoma “name” five times; (2) a dual use of the cognates sozen “save, heal” and soteria “salvation, healing”. The components and connotations of the word “name” are assessed and various translations are proposed. The multiple senses of the sozein group are explored and translation problems are discussed. Two difficulties confront the translator of Matt. 4:24. The first is a textual problem: should we read kai after sunechomenou? The second is the meaning of the rare word seleniazomenous. Examining the difficulties raises certain important questions about method in textual criticism and translation. View Less
