A response to certain criticisms levelled against the UBS Greek text by J. Keith Elliott in Novum Testamentum concerning the extensive evidence for and against the textual variants. Recognizes the limitations of a restricted apparatus, yet estimates that 2000 may well represent the bulk of significant variants. The purpose of the UBS text is to recover meaningful variants and, for these, to cite fully the evidence. The new evidence seems to support Hort’s general view of the superiority of B and the UBS textual apparatus helps discover this support. View Less

Four examples (1 Cor. 9:20, Rom. 8:2, Lk. 23:34, and Acts 12:25) are used to demonstrate how three crucial issues come into play in making any text-critical decision. The three areas are: (1) scribal tendencies and paleographic factors, (2) the author and his style, and (3) the general reputation and trustworthiness of individual manuscripts. An assessment of the manuscript evidence for this reading with an interpretation of the evidence and a discussion of some of the commentaries leads to a conclusion: that it is difficult to come to a conclusion, but that there is a hint of the priority of the shorter reading: (1) the independent Caesarean texts favor it; (2) Tischendorf’s argument for the shorter text is strong; (3) the textual evidence and the composition and purpose of Mark is balancing data; and (4) the addition can be explained as a scriptio plena. A grammatical note suggesting the possible form of a Greek word in one NT text in light of the general grammatical principles governing the form of the word, pleas. It is indeclinable when followed by a dependent genitive, and when not followed by a genitive it is declinable. In Jn. 1:14 pleres ought not be read only as a nominative, but being an undeclinable adjective can stand with any case. The solution to translation must be sought, therefore, on exegetical grounds.
