From notes made while the NEB translations was in progress, we have available C. H. Dodd’s explanations of why the translators settled for certain renderings. Discusses four problems: parthenos in Matt. 1:23 and Lk. 1:27, a word with wide and indeterminate meaning; tei miai ton sabbaton in Acts 20:7, whose meaning in the context seems to be Saturday; ptochoi toi pneumati in Matt. 5:3 whose meaning is based upon what being poor spirit signifies; and adelphos in various places in Paul where Paul is specifically not referring to Christians and a meaning like, have a warm regard for, applies. The main emphasis in modern linguistics has shifted from syntax to semiotic questions. Nida’s most recent book is based upon this shift and the assumption that each lexical unit is composed of a number of semantic components and that the words of any language can be grouped into semantic domains. What follows is an appreciative review of Nida’s 1975 book, which stresses his own limits to referential meaning, to intensionalist relations of meaning and to contrastive procedural methods.
