We are pleased to be able to publish at last a “recommended” list of passages which together make up a set of Selections from the Old Testament representative of that book as a whole.
For some years a suggested list of passages from the Old Testament has been under discussion. A preliminary list was drawn up and circulated among United Bible Societies personnel-this was the list which appeared in the article
Suggestions for an Order of Translation (William Smalley, TBT, July 1969). As a result of comments and suggestions received, that original list has been revised a number of times, and it has now been given its final shape.
The list which follows has the approval of the U.B.S. Sub-Committee on Helps for Translators, and is recommended to Bible Societies round the world for their adoption and adaptation, as they wish.
It is not possible in the space available to print more than the list of passages together with a brief indication of their content. The material recommended by the Sub-Committee includes a full list of section headings as well as bridge statements which both summarize omitted sections and serve to connect the various passages together. There is also a set of introductions to each of the books of the Old Testament. Copies of all this other material can be made available by the Bible Societies to translators and others who may be interested.-Editor.
