In making selections one must ask what they are meant to do, for a variety of problems can make a passage inappropriate in a given culture. There are two basic problems: (1) people do not have the necessary background to understand the selection; and (2) changes may need to be made in order that the selection stand alone. Adaptations are then discussed: (1) an introduction printed with the selection; and (2) adaptations in the text of the translation itself, with examples.
