There are many deficiencies in the four Swahili translations in use today, so the desirability of a new translation becomes clear. Modern changes in Swahili and developments concerning the knowledge of the language have brought two tendencies: the upper class desire for more literary Swahili, and the interior which desires a clear, simple, more idiomatic vocabulary. A variety of names and titles appear to describe divine beings in the OT. YHWH presents a problem to the translator, since it is the name of the national God of Israel, but in its total Biblical context it is related to a revelation to all mankind. `el compounded with an adjective or noun becomes more complicated. Only by an awareness of the character and development of Israel’s religion can the significance of the divine names be understood. View Less

The Episcopal Committee of the Confraternities of Christian Doctrine has inaugurated a new program with regard to the translation of the Bible. One aspect of the translation was the decision to make use of the spelling of Biblical names as found in the RSV. The spellings of OT books in the Douay-Rheims, Confraternity, and RSV are compared.
