Differences in the linguistic structure of English and Spanish create a problem in printing a Spanish text of the Bible. In English word endings are such that they are generally easy to spot even if the text is printed continuously, without word divisions. The irregularity of English orthography trains, to a certain extent. English readers to “spot” entire word units. These peculiarities are absent in Spanish making full and clear word divisions necessary. Therefore, format is important in the preparation of a readable format of the Spanish Scriptures. View Less

The second part of the New Testament to appear in the simplified version by Miss A. Cressman has recently been published by the American Bible Society. If is, perhaps, even more successful than the version of Mark which appeared first. There are a few words and expressions which may not be universally acceptable (the version is primarily intended for use in Liberia), but in general this version of John’s Gospel will be excellent for use in many areas. We here quote John 6:35-42 which seems a specially well rendered section. A comparison with any other English version will reveal the inconspicuous but important simplifications which have been made.
