The Bible Translator: Volume 12, Issue 1

Translators of the Netherlands Bible Society have frequently found it desirable to publish books of Bible stories before proceeding to Bible translation itself. Some of the advantages to doing this are described. Additions by P. Middelkoop have been inserted at appropriate places. Describes the type of personnel, method of work, text, and principles to guide translating which were involved in the preparation of a new Roman Catholic version of the NT in Dutch. Sets forth principles which ought to be kept in mind in translating to avoid sacrificing too much to literalness in the name of faithfulness; not slavishly to reproduce the form, but seek an equivalent that really lives. The need for versions in contemporary language will make fairly frequent revision of modern translations necessary. The great advantage is that in this way the Bible remains living and understandable for the faithful. It must not become an antique, a sort of venerable relic of the past or a cultural monument. Deals with the problem of reducing spoken language to writing and producing a translation which will be accessible to everyone when various groups in the same country have widely diverging methods of spelling. Compromises were necessary, but basically the orthography was based on the phonemic system and structure of the language concerned. The case in point is the Negro-English or Sranan, which is the vernacular creole language in Surinam (Caribbean). View Less

The first volume in the series "Helps for Translators" published under the imprint of the United Bible Societies has now appeared. It is available free to translators working on the Old Testament. and requests should be made to the Bible Society with which the translator is connected. Treats the special problem of translating the term “know” (yada` or ginosko) when it is used for sexual intercourse. This is especially problematic in languages which do not use the term “know” in this sense. View Less
