The languages of the southern area of the French Cameroun, which are included in the northern border of the Bantu group, display a rich vocabulary of emotional expressions relating to the heart. According to their literal sense, they describe size, quantity, position, activity, or animal characteristics. The some 60 occurrences of the words for heart in Acts peculiar to the Bantu translation are given brief consideration. View Less

The translation of Acts 2:24, “having loosed the pangs of death,” alludes to the labor pain suffered by a woman in giving birth to her child. As such it is made to describe either the pains death is experiencing or those which death is inflicting on Jesus. Considering the phrase in the LXX and in its parallelistic poetic structure, it may reasonable to infer that the phrase was meant to convey the meaning “the bonds of death” in conformity with the Hebrew phrase it was translating. The question is raised whether “threatening” is a legitimate translation of the Hebrew “g’rh.” A study of this word in other contexts discloses that “rebuke” is appropriate or required in four passages, and that neither word is strong enough to render the sense in some passages. The conclusion asserts that “threat” is adequate in Prov. 13:8. View Less

The American Bible Society, with the cooperation of the National Bible Society of Scotland and the Wurtemburg Bible Society of Germany, is preparing a new Greek text of the New Testament which would represent the latest discoveries, a careful evaluation of the existing data, and the presentation of relevant evidence on all points involving significant exegetical problems.
